As a common cultural bond linking people around the world together, sports bring joy and happiness, enrich lives and make lives fuller. The culture of sport that influences both mind and body can well be said to be of vital importance to the formation of a bright, enriched, vital and fulfilled society, and leads to the sound development of individuals' minds and bodies. In order to help to bring up young people to be sound and healthy, it is necessary to instill in them the ability to learn and think for themselves and to foster in them a zest for living that makes them more complete human beings. Together, David Carruthers and CFL athletes of the Charge Through Life program are striving to motivate children about reading and literacy. "Charge Through Life" Program Overview: Mission Statement: The purpose of the the "Charge Through Life" program is to enhance and build upon children’s literacy skills in Canada, allowing them to grow as valuable, contributing individuals in their community. To enhance literacy skills in Canada by providing quality presentations and by providing quality, high interest, affordable books for children and their families. The program will show children that by reading positive books you can learn new things. When learning new things, you will gain more confidence as an individual and "Charge Through Life". To promote the "Charge Through Life"program allowing children to be empowered to read and explore literacy by national sports figures which promote fitness and learning. The "Charge Through Life" program will strive to showcase Canadian athletes of the CFLPA, thus allowing children to connect with them on a more personal level, in turn educating children about the importance of literacy, goal setting, being positive role models in the community and physical fitness. Method *By using players from the Canadian Football League, prominent authors and successful local or national business owners. *By booking the "Charge Through Life" program at schools, community groups, service clubs, etc. *Speakers will be able to share from first hand experience the many benefits that have accrued to them as a result of reading. Additional Goals Charge Through Life will help enhance the branding of the CFLPA (Canadian Football League Players Association) and the branding of individual CFL players. By using pro sports players we can grab the attention of the kids and adults alike as pro sports players as a whole are idolized and placed on a pedestal. To provide both an opportunity to gain exposure and also provide an additional revenue stream for those CFL players who wish to take part in the program. Charge Through Life will help enhance the branding of sponsors for the program. Business Description 1. The "Charge Through Life" program is a positive program that involves the future of Canada, our children. 2. The "Charge Through Life" program promotes the CFLPA and its athletes as valuable members of the Canadian community as important contributors to the strong building of our communities. 3. The "Charge Through Life" program strives to build and enhance the literacy skills of Canadian children through a fun and interactive program. 4. The "Charge Through Life" program provides the opportunity to learn about youth leadership and the importance of being not only a role model in one’s own community, but being a global role model. Market Analysis and Research Literacy is a world wide concern. It is stated in the Canadian Journal of Public Health that literacy effects many different areas individuals lives in the Canadian community. "Literacy and health research in Canada: where have we been and where should we go?" Rootman, Ronson 2005 Mar-Apr;96 Suppl 2:S62-77, The Canadian journal of Public Health. "The review found that low literacy has direct and indirect impacts on health. Families are at risk due to difficulty reading medication prescriptions, baby formula instructions and health and safety education materials. People with lower levels of literacy tend to live and work in less healthy environments. They have more difficulties obtaining employment and income security. Determinants of literacy include: education, early childhood development, aging, living and working conditions, personal capacity/genetics, gender and culture. Action is needed to improve literacy and health through a combination of health communication, education and training, community development, organizational development, and policy development. There is some evidence that such interventions can have a positive effect on health, particularly when combined with one another." A program such as "Charge Through Life" would not only empower children to read, but to provide them with an additional opportunity to enhance their lives through literacy, health and as valuable contributing members of Canadian society. In turn it would provide the CFL’s athletes and children’s author, David Carruthers, with the opportunity to continue to give back to the community in many ways. Project Phases: Phase One Phase one of the Charge Through life program will bring quality literacy and motivational presentations to Schools, Social Service Community Groups and Organizations that have an interest in providing leadership programming to youth and have an interest in enhancing literacy skills. The initial presentations will take place in Ontario as a combined presentation effort from David Carruthers and Jude St. John or other CFL athletes. As the program grows , or when necessary we will utilize other CFL athletes for the program. Once the program is more established it can branch out to other Provinces and utilize other CFLPA players and other presenters. Phase Two Phase two will incorporate the sale of children’s books, written by David Carruthers at presentations and any related events. Money from the sale of books will be used to continue the program and to also give back to the community with a focus on literacy projects. During Phase Two, it is our goal to have promotion at CFL games in Ontario to promote the Charge Through Life program. Books will also be sold at CFL games, events, and sponsor locations. Phase Three Phase Three will incorporate the sale of Rhino dolls. Books and dolls to be sold at CFL games, presentations, events and sponsor locations. During Phase Three, a larger focus will grow at the CFL game level, with having the Reading Rhino mascot to help promote the program. Money from the sale of the Rhino’s will help sustain the program and to build upon it. Donations will also be made to local children’s charities with a focus on literacy. Phase Four Phase Four brings larger scale events to the program where all facets of the program are brought together. Long term Vision It is our long term vision to take the "Charge Through Life" program nationally. It is our long term goal to have a sponsor which is the national sponsor. Money Flow for the Charge Through Life Program It is the current plan for all speakers to be paid from the money received from the fees charged for each presentation of the "Charge Through Life" program. Sponsorship fees will primarily, if not exclusively, be used for promotional and marketing purposes to promote the "Charge Through Life" program. Sponsorship fees may from time to time be used to subsidize speaking fees in circumstances where program fees are temporarily reduced. Temporary fee reductions, such as our pre-launch special may be used to encourage booking the "Charge Through Life" program., to help bring awareness to the program. It is important to understand that the "Charge Through Life" program and its associated company, Baby Bear Toys Inc., are not now, nor do we have any intentions, to become a non-profit organization. Program Motto "When you read... You’ll Charge Through Life and... Charge Forward Into Learning!"
